Powermetal.de Awards Morri's Rock Boutique 8/10

German rock and metal publication Powermetal.de has awarded Morri’s Rock Boutique 8 out of 10 in a review by Tobias Dahs, filed in the site’s Prog Rock / Art Rock section. (Quotes translated from the German.)

Dahs takes the album’s title at its word: the band, he writes, helped itself with both hands from the prog shop’s display case and packed up everything that would fit inside the wider prog frame. He starts with “Storms” — “a relaxed prog rocker that slots in somewhere between GENESIS and TOTO” — where the dominant keyboards and the vocals in the chorus are what carry the track “over the hit finish line.”

From “The Cossack’s Dream” onward the record grows “increasingly playful, more intricate and more varied,” and he is explicit that this is not a complaint:

“The trio and its guests brew up a very pleasing prog cocktail that delivers a lot of great moments.”

He singles out “Lakeview Samurai,” with Nam Chumo on vocals, as “a really brisk seventies rock song with DEEP PURPLE flair”; “The Lucky Ones,” with Rick Witkowski, for its bluesy groove and “a superb keyboard solo” in the middle section; and “Another Country” for bringing the harder-rocking tones back and picking up where “the strong opener ‘Storms’” left off.

His reservation is that the album asks something of the listener — the stylistic turns and the rotating guest cast can leave “the impression of a compilation that could have stood a little more uniformity.” The verdict: for anyone who can make friends with the album’s playful, wide-ranging spirit, “Refestramus delivers a comprehensive and, in large stretches, highly entertaining full-service prog.”
